Michelle Obama is my patron saint. I have bowed before her visage many times: that cover of Vogue, the Naeem Khan gown at the first state dinner of this term, the white evening gown during her visit with Queen Elizabeth. Then there was last night at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. Her speech last night served as her canonization in the www.40muse.com church of black, 40 plus and proud.
Simple yet stylish bob bouncing, behaving and shining like new money? Check. Well-cut and flattering ombre brocade dress by Tracy Reese? Check. Greige nail polish? Double check.
I can gush ad nauseam about the trends and how I am going to make them my own. We’ll cover that at another time on these pages. What made me smile and get a bit misty-eyed was her message. Just in case you missed it:
I won’t delve into the politics of her speech; there are plenty of folks out there who are far more adept at that: www.jackandjillpolitics.com, www.Politico.com, www.Politic365.com. I will say that seeing the “Mom-in-Chief” made me beam with pride. A tall, brown woman with hips, hair, lips and a nose like mine and from a line of “regular folks” addressed the convention hall as The First Lady of the United States. My mom described the address perfectly: “She brought it on home.” Indeed, she did. And with that, let the church say “AMEN.”
